The State of Phony Populism

“Barack Obama put on a deft performance Tuesday night. With trills of empathy, the president’s voice soared to hit the high notes. He easily carried a tune of economic populism. But after five years of Obama in the White House, Americans should know by now that he was lip-syncing the words.”

Greg Russak‘s insight:

This article hits the target really well for those of us on the left still waiting for the progressive Obama to lead.

For all the hand-wringing, wailing, and gnashing of teeth on the right, what doesn’t seem to be realized is that Obama is often more a Reagan-era Republican than today’s Republicans.

Once we get past the PPACA, the question remains: Where is the real channeling of FDR or anything actually resembling a truly progressive agenda?

He’s pretty much defending the NSA and still uses drones, right? He wants fast track approval for the TPP, right? He isn’t hammering the NRA after every gun crime for their abject lunacy in resisting background checks. He hasn’t come out in opposition of the Keystone XL pipeline. He’s recirculating and recycling his own Big Money inner circle supporters, and he isn’t calling out the obstructionist Republicans – he isn’t "welcoming" their hatred – every single time they obstruct.

Ok, he actually did rub the GOP’s noses in it during SOTU regarding their childish behavior over the PPACA votes. A long-overdue move, in my book, and he paid lip service to Gitmo, so he gets a half-point for that.

So, what am I missing about this guy, besides the fact that he’s NOT a dictator, he’s not all that liberal, and he CAN’T and WON’T get all that much done with his pen alone?
