Logical Fallacy #8 – Personal Incredulity

Climate science deniers come to mind immediately.

Just because you don’t understand something doesn’t mean it’s not true.

Or, to quote Neil deGrasse Tyson, “The good thing about science is that it’s true whether or not you believe in it.”

Logical Fallacy #9 – Special Pleading

For when you just can’t face the fact that you’re wrong. Not might be wrong. Are wrong.

While you’re posting all the examples of this, how about clicking and signing in support of what we all should want – the text of the #TPP revealed!!

Young (and Old) People: Do Not Be Fooled by Rand Paul

I’m all for….
….putting the NSA and the CIA back in their cages,
….taking drones out of the hands of presidents,
….spending tax revenues in wiser ways,
….legalizing marijuana (which, btw, Paul is NOT in favor of doing; see here and here) and
….shrinking our global empire.

That does NOT make me a libertarian. It shouldn’t make anyone else believe they might be one, either.

(The views expressed in this blog are my own and do not reflect the views or opinions of others, including Coffee Party USA, its board, or its members.)

Logical Fallacy #10 – Loaded Question

…as in, “Why are you opposed to all the free trade in the #TPP?”

A couple of #BigMoney shills just wrote an op ed in the NYT attempting to ask that same loaded question.

They are wrong. Help to prove it.

Sign on to the Whitehouse petition (above demanding that the full text of the TPP be revealed.

After all, if it’s so great, why is it secret?
(And, is that a Loaded Question, too?)

Just when you thought you understood #freespeech and #censorship, there’s this.

“The value of intellectual freedom is far from self-evident. It’s hardly natural to defend the rights of one person over the feelings of a group; to put up with all the trouble that comes with free minds and free expression; to stand beside the very people who repel you.”

More than a couple people I know could benefit from understanding this.

What about you?

Only the weak and obedient accept limitations on a discussion, and that weakness and obedience surely leads to subjugation and oppression.

What is freedom of expression? Without the freedom to offend, it ceases to exist. – Salman Rushdie

How do you read this? What do you think he means? Are there circumstances where it doesn’t apply?

Intelligence Squared asks: Are liberals shutting down speech and debate on campus?

What is college for? For many, it’s a time for personal and intellectual growth, to meet new people, and to explore ideas and philosophies that challenge their beliefs. Or is it? Recent cancellations of conservative speakers, rescinded honorary degrees, and scrutiny of certain campus groups have heightened perceptions that there is pervasive liberal intolerance on campuses. Are liberals shutting down speech and debate on campus? Or is this theory a myth, based on the preponderance of liberals at universities rather than intentionally discriminatory actions?

“I defy anyone to listen to any Democratic apparatchik insinuate that Snowden is a Russian agent and identify any differences with how Nixon apparatchiks smeared Ellsberg (or, for that matter, how today’s warnings from Obama officials about the grave harm coming from leaks differ from the warnings issued by Bush and Nixon officials).”

I’m with Greenwald on this.

Dissenting voices are rarely tolerated and always come under attack by those who concern themselves only with conformity and compliance.

From almost exactly a year ago. Wall Street’s dream match-up? Hillary vs Jeb.

“If it turns out to be Jeb versus Hillary we would love that and either outcome would be fine,” one top Republican-leaning Wall Street lawyer said over lunch in midtown Manhattan last week. “We could live with either one. Jeb versus Joe Biden would also be fine. It’s Rand Paul or Ted Cruz versus someone like Elizabeth Warren that would be everybody’s worst nightmare.”

Maybe wishes do come true when you have enough money to make them so.

Democrats, will you vote for her in the primaries and general?
Same question to you Republicans; what about Jeb?
How about the 40-or-so-odd-percent of you who don’t call yourselves Ds or Rs? What are Independents planning to do this time around?

Coming to Terms With the American Empire

“It is true that the United States did not genuinely intend to be an empire. It is also true that its intentions do not matter one way or another. Circumstance, history and geopolitics have created an entity that, if it isn’t an empire, certainly looks like one. Empires can be far from oppressive. The Persians were quite liberal in their outlook. The American ideology and the American reality are not inherently incompatible. But two things must be faced: First, the United States cannot give away the power it has. There is no practical way to do that. Second, given the vastness of that power, it will be involved in conflicts whether it wants to or not. Empires are frequently feared, sometimes respected, but never loved by the rest of the world. And pretending that you aren’t an empire does not fool anyone.” – George Friedman, Stratfor
(“Coming to Terms With the American Empire is republished with permission of Stratfor.”)

Sorry, this is not a meme. It’s going to take time to read this, but I think you’ll find the time to have been well-spent.

What do you think of the American Empire? Is it in decline? Can it last?

p.s. Speaking of empire, make sure you sign the petition to reveal the text of the TPP unless, of course, you’re ok with being a “dutiful subject.”

The Dirty Little Secret of #Libertarians? They’re Really #Corporatists.

“First, the obvious. Not all libertarians are alike. The same, of course, is true for conservatives and liberals.

“That said, I’ve had my fill of libertarians acting like they are the only ones who believe in a free society.”

The Dirty Little Secret of

Logical Fallacy 11 – Burden of Proof

Any claim you make is on you to prove, not on others to disprove.

Seems like a pretty straightforward idea, right? So, why does it seem so many need to be reminded of it?

America’s libertarian freakshow: Inside the free-market fetish of Rand Paul & Ted Cruz

“So the solution provided by libertarian leaning individuals like Paul and Cruz is based on this false notion of what capitalism actually is. They say that government is always the problem, and that it is the states fault for the crony-capitalism of today. But it is not the state who has corrupted the corporations, but the corporations who have corrupted the state.”

I totally agree.

Economic Inequality: It’s Far Worse Than You Think

Scientific American reporting on the reality of economic inequality.

If you’re still denying that economic inequality isn’t a terrible and growing problem for this country, perhaps the above article and the video it links to (below) will change your mind.

For the #GOP, it’s the billionaires’ primary

“If, however, voters demand change from the candidates, it’s just possible that 2016 could be remembered as the year the tide of money crested, instead of just another campaign that saw the dollars rise.”

It’s on us to demand change.

Coffee Party USA is inviting you to sign the following petition which we will deliver to all members of the United States Congress.

Obama is Failing Us All by Ignoring the Need for Currency Rules in #TPP

“The Obama administration is doing its full court press, pulling out all the stops to get Congress to approve the fast-track authority that is almost certainly necessary to get the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) through Congress. One of the biggest remaining stumbling blocks is that the deal will almost certainly not include provisions on currency. This means that parties to the agreement will still be able to depress the value of their currency against the dollar in order to gain a competitive advantage. This is a really big deal, which everyone thinking about the merits of the TPP should understand.”

2015-04-26 (6pm):
Isn’t this crony capitalism? Does @RepBillShuster expect us to believe his romantic relationship with a lobbyist had no influence on him?

#Cronyism #NoCronyCapitalism #EndCronyCapitalism

“I did not have sexual relations with that women.”

“We fight them over there so we don’t have to fight them over here.”
“If I would have to do it all over again, I would.”
“Well, listen. I’m not qualified to debate the science over climate change.”

Do you think these qualify as ambiguities?

Politics seemingly offer an infinite list of examples.

What are some of your favorites?

(Can you name who said these without Googling?)

Tom Hayden proposes how #TPP and #TTIP could be a vehicle for a global living wage and a cleaner planet if only Obama had the courage to make it so.

“President Obama’s recent progressive initiatives – pursuing diplomacy with Iran, opening relations with Cuba, protecting undocumented immigrants, lifting the federal minimum wage, extending Medicaid benefits to millions of uninsured Americans, imposing tough regulations on coal – are facing furious Republican opposition on every front. That’s why it’s peculiar that he persists in pushing pro-corporate trade agreements over the objections of a majority of Democrats, unions and environmentalists.”

#Corporatism run amok?

“And given the refusal of the corporate state to address the mounting suffering of the poor and working poor, draconian state repression and indiscriminate use of lethal state violence against unarmed people of color, I think the new black radical is right. It will be a long, hot and violent summer.”
– Chris Hedges
